Jesus: The Life and Light of all Mankind

40For40 Bible Reading Day 1: John 1:1-42

jesus life light all mankind

In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness and the darkness does not overcome it. John 1:4-5 NIV

Life and light. When you come in contact with the spiritual illumination of life ‘to the Jesus degree,’ the essence of what is truth, hope, joy, peace and most of all love, strikes you like a direct hit to the heart.

That life is in Jesus. That life is Jesus. Not just eternal life, but life in the here and now, too. It’s what he’s all about. It’s what his mission was (and still is) all about – shining his life-light on all mankind.

John used the word “life” 36 times in his gospel. No other New Testament book used it more than 17 times. Life was a big deal to John. And he made sure to point out the source and method for obtaining it:

“Jesus answered, ‘I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.'” John 14:6

We spend much of our lives feeling empty, drained or overwhelmed with problems and issues of all kind. We look for someone to shed the kind of light on our lives that will help us find our way. All we really need to do is look to the one who is himself life and light.

To the woman at the well in John 4, who asked, “Where can you get this living water?” Jesus replied: “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”

John’s gospel helps us understand that everything we need in life is found in Jesus.

I think this is what Paul was getting at when he expressed this prayer to the church at Ephesus: “I pray that the eyes of your heart be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in his holy people.” Ephesians 1:18

And the best part of all this is the darkness can’t defeat or overcome what the life and light of Jesus in our hearts can become.
