As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love. If you keep my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Fatherʼs commands and remain in his love. I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete. My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you. John 15:9-12 NIV
There is a central theme of the Bible involving loving God (because he first loved us) – reading, meditating on, remembering his word – obeying his word (following his commands and remaining faithful) – loving God – loving others (the Great Commandment) – the result of which is experiencing prosperity, blessings, joy and the constant and loving presence of God our heavenly Father.
This central and recurring theme is evident in today’s selected verses for the #LoveChallenge, John 15:9-12. And, there are a great many other Scriptures that support this as well:
- Deuteronomy 10:12-13
- Luke 11:28
- Joshua 1:6-8
This all hinges on Jesus’ words to “Remain in my love.” He goes on to explain what that means and how to remain in his love: “If you keep my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Fatherʼs commands and remain in his love.”
So remaining is the same as keeping – his commandments, just as he kept his Father’s commandments.
The blessing, the joy, the abundant life and the ability to lead a victorious life then flow from remaining in his love.
For today’s #LoveChallenge, let’s focus on tuning in to what it is God’s been saying to us through his word. What has the Holy Spirit brought to our attention that requires action – obedience? Chances are it’s been an area of our walk with him he wants us to grow in. It’s something he’s wanting for us to be victorious in – to mature in.
Maybe it’s the command he gave here: My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you.
That’s as good as any to start with. Wouldn’t you agree?
