If I speak in the tongues of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. If I give all I possess to the poor and give over my body to hardship that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing. I Corinthians 13:1-3
There are pastors, Christian leaders, and brothers and sisters in Christ whose message, faith and generosity make a profound impression on me. But then I see them call out “the other side” for something or other in a tit-for-tat argument, and I wonder, where is love?
Some will argue that love is in telling others about Jesus so they can believe in him, be saved…
But Jesus said, “Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye?” (Luke 6:41)
I get that we need to tell others about Jesus. But I also know they must see the love of Jesus in my life and actions first.
So, let me be the first to say I’m sorry for any offensive tweet, Facebook post or comment that attempted to point out the fault of your position without taking into account my own (huge) shortcomings – of which there are many.
And Lord, help me to better understand that a loving faith is a winsome faith. And clothe me today with a winsome faith – clothe me with humility, kindness, love…
“Since God chose you to be the holy people he loves, you must clothe yourselves with tenderhearted mercy, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. Make allowance for each other’s faults, and forgive anyone who offends you. Remember, the Lord forgave you, so you must forgive others. Above all, clothe yourselves with love, which binds us all together in perfect harmony.” Colossians 3:12ff
So I think that if we want to live a truly effective, meaningful and fruitful life we will put love for God and others first. Let love be our filter. If we can’t say it or do it in love, let’s not say or do it at all.
