Very truly I tell you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be judged but has crossed over from death to life. John 5:24
Today’s 40For40 Bible reading in the writings of John covers:
- The Authority of the Son, John 5:16-30, and three more “Very truly” statements Jesus’ makes. I think that makes 7 so far out of the total of 26 in John’s Gospel.
- Testimonies About Jesus, John 5:31-47. This and the above passage are set in the context of Jesus defense of doing good work on the Sabbath, in violation of the Jewish leaders so-called “regulations” that were never part of God’s decree in the Scriptures. And so Jesus takes them to task with a few “very truly” statements and a rebuke (v39 – 47) that points out they’ve basically missed the main point and purpose of the Scriptures and Moses having to do with pointing to him.
- Jesus Feeds the Five Thousand, John 6:1-15. If you’re counting (and I am), this is the fourth of John’s seven signs or miracles. Jesus turned five small loaves and two small fish into an all-you-can-eat feast.
That’s all I have to say about today’s reading because last night and today was kind of a busy one. It’s late now, and my routine got thrown off with travel and helping my mom out.
I wonder if Jesus had days like I had. Oh wait, he did. The last couple days was all about life disrupted. Makes me feel better Jesus went through times of exhaustion, hunger, thirst, weariness, misunderstood accusations, and people who wanted him to be a certain way.
No wonder he “withdrew again to a mountain by himself.” John 6:15
